See Amsterdam…the view of a Glasgwegian girl

16 03 2007

Drinking coffee on the pavement
In Dam square.
Everyone criss-crossing across the tram tracks
Thwack goes the electricity in the tram’s
Electric line.
Men and woman; stick people, like Lowrie’s
On bikes; on foot,
On their merry, healthy way.
The hungry smell of noodle bars,
The old man plays his glockenspiel
Few business suits,
No shell suits.
Oh how I wish I could stay.

Night falls, streets are quieter.
Couples and stag nights
Pausing under the red lights
The mannequins in their negligées
Startle us by moving.
The coffee shops and late bars and jazz clubs oozing,
Sounds and smells
Soothing me.
Oh how I wish I could stay.
